About Me

My name is Sara Kate Burnett and I am a Junior Honors Student at the University of Missouri, working towards gaining a Bachelor of Journalism with an emphasis in Documentary in the Murray Center for Documentary Journalism and pursuing a minor in Political Science. A Memphis native, I blend storytelling, communication, and videography to create impactful, accurate narratives.

I currently work on the Visuals Team at the Columbia Missourian Newspaper and have interned with News Channel 3 Memphis and the Overton Park Shell Concert Series.

​

My work has earned recognition as a finalist in the Indie Memphis Youth Film Festival, and I have experience producing children's TV content for Memphis’s PBS affiliate, WKNO-TV.

​

I also serves as a Tri-Director of Mizzou’s Homecoming Committee, leading the nation’s largest student-run homecoming and managing a social media presence with more than 14,000 followers.

Throughout highschool, Sara Kate discovered her passion for visual storytelling through intensive film classes and hands-on production experience. As a finalist in the competitive Indie Memphis Youth Film Festival, she showcased her early talent for filmmaking. Her initiative led to valuable internships with Forever Ready Productions, where she shadowed professionals at an independent production company. Most notably, she produced, wrote, and directed a children's television pilot for WKNO-TV (Memphis's PBS affiliate), demonstrating remarkable leadership and creative abilities that set the foundation for her future in documentary journalism.

Currently, Sara Kate is channeling her documentary expertise into two significant senior capstone projects: an in-depth documentary film and a compelling photo essay. These projects represent the culmination of her undergraduate education, allowing her to apply her technical skills and storytelling approach to create substantive, ethically-produced visual narratives that reflect her growth as a documentary journalist.
